Magnetic Insight is developing solutions in Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI), a ground-breaking technology that will overcome major deficiencies with current clinical and translational research imaging techniques.

Magnetic Insight Inc. was founded by one of the leading research groups in the global field of Magnetic Particle Imaging from UC Berkeley.

Support for this technology was realized through funding programs exceeding $12M, including major contributions from the Brain Initiative, California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Keck foundation, and a University of California Discovery grant, jointly supported by General Electric and the State of California.

Anna Christensen, PhD

Dr Christensen has spent the last 16 years commercializing platform technologies in imaging and diagnostics. Most recently, she led the in vivo imaging business for PerkinElmer Inc and Caliper Life Sciences as the global business leader.  Prior to Caliper Life Sciences, she held senior management positions at DiscoverX and Molecular Devices. In addition to her commercial experience, she holds advanced degrees in cell biology and neurobiology from UC San Diego and Copenhagen University.

Patrick Goodwill, PhD

Dr. Goodwill has spent the last 9 years leading the development team in Magnetic Particle Imaging at UC Berkeley. In his role, he has designed and built five prototype MPI scanners, and developed the x-space reconstruction systems theory that enables quantitative, high-quality MPI images.  Dr. Goodwill has a PhD in Bioengineering from UC Berkeley, and a  B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. Prior to UC Berkeley, Dr. Goodwill designed microprocessors at Intel Corporation.

Steven Conolly, PhD

Prof. Conolly is a the Montford Cook Professor of Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science at the University of California Berkeley. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, where he developed new types of MRI scanners for over twenty years. At Berkeley he has applied his knowledge of building new imaging systems to MPI. He has a history of innovation, and for his many inventions, he was named one of only 24 people named a Stanford Outstanding Inventor.

David Panzarella, MBA

Mr. Panzarella has over 12 years of experience within research imaging, leading the global commercial infrastructure which included sales, service, field applications and customer support for PerkinElmer, Caliper Life Sciences and Xenogen. He has become a cornerstone within preclinical imaging in developing strategic customer partnerships while setting the bar for technology support within the imaging community. Prior to joining Xenogen, he held commercial positions with Biospace, Cerner, WebMD and Critikon (a J&J company). He has a BS degree in Marketing and Business Administration from Wright State University and an MBA in Finance from the Hagan School of Business at Iona College.

Dr. Wintermark is currently a Professor of Radiology and the Chief of Neuroradiology at the Stanford University. His specific interest and expertise is in stroke, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, movement disorders and psychiatric disorders. He chairs on the research committees for the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), American Society of Functional Neuroradiology (ASFNR) and the imaging working group of the NINDS-funded stroke clinical trial network (StrokeNET).

Craig Coombs has been the head of Coombs Medical Device Consulting since 1998. His group specializes in hands-on, innovative, US and European regulatory strategies for start-ups and companies that need to change their business strategies. Their skills also include cost-effective first-in-man or VC milestone clinical trial design, management and analysis. Mr. Coombs received his BS in Biology from Stanford University. He is a former Vice President of Medtronic in the areas of Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance and Clinical Studies.  Mr. Coombs is adjunct faculty for the University of California (Santa Cruz) in Medical Device Submissions and a frequently invited speaker at industry and government regulatory affairs seminars.

Mr. Michael (Mike) Harsh is co-founder of Terapede Systems with over 36 years’ experience in healthcare technology, focused on diagnostic imaging. He served as Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for GE Healthcare, a $17 billion division of General Electric. As the Global Technology Leader of Imaging Technologies at GE Global Research, he led the research for X-Ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, PET and Optical Imaging, and the research associated with computer visualization/image analysis and superconducting systems. Mike was elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows, for his significant contributions to the medical and biological engineering field. Additionally, Mike holds numerous U.S. patents in the field of Medical Imaging and Instrumentation.  Mike received a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and he is a member of the University of Wisconsin Madison  Industrial Advisory Board to the College of Engineering.
